Entrepreneur Jeff Hudson seems to have stumbled upon the winning

recipe for generating awareness: chocolate and free stock.

Hoping to get his Internet start-up, MS2, noticed at the Demo 2000 tech

conference last week, Hudson placed chocolate bars on the chairs of

around 1,000 attendees. The catch? Each bar came with a coupon that

allowed the recipient to buy 50 shares of stock in his company for 17.5

cents each.

A few lucky winners received an offer allowing them to snag 1,000 shares

at the same price.

’We wanted to attract attention,’ said Hudson. ’It certainly did the

trick.’

In the end, the coupons given away represented nearly 45,000 shares in

MS2, a Web-based service that seeks to accelerate product design. Hudson

said it was impossible to put a price tag on the potential value of his

giveaway. But if the company’s share price skyrockets, the stunt could

well wind up having ’cost’ millions of dollars.
