SAN FRANCISCO: Middleberg + Associates has snatched Barbara Kohn away from Brodeur to lead its San Francisco outpost.

Kohn, formerly head of Brodeur's San Jose office, becomes Middleberg's first San Fran GM. Since opening its doors in the city last summer (PRWeek, August 2, 1999), the agency has picked up a number of California companies, including The Industry Standard and GoTo.com, and grown its west-coast staff to 12.

Kohn, who has worked in Silicon Valley PR since 1983 (including the past four years with Brodeur), said she was attracted to Middleberg's track record with companies like Britannica.com and CBS Marketwatch.

'I looked at their Web site and saw the accounts, which got me interested right away,' she said. 'And then when we met in person, we were all in sync philosophically.'

Prior to her Brodeur stint, Kohn spent more than two years as a VP at Thomas Associates (now Ketchum Thomas) and four years as VP/GM at Miller Communications (now Miller-Shandwick Technologies).

At Brodeur, SVP Deanne Phillips has effectively replaced Kohn as leader of the San Jose office.
