programs.

The assignment is a challenging one, as liquor manufacturers aren’t

exactly renowned for their social conscience. Nonetheless, Smith boasts

a resume that seems to make him the right person for the job.

Smith worked at Philip Morris for 16 years, including a stint in the

corporate affairs department of Philip Morris-owned Miller Brewing

Company.

He later served as director of worldwide marketing for Hill & Knowlton

and as vice chairman of the international relief organization

AmeriCares.

Smith was also an unpaid advisor to President Clinton’s defense team

during his impeachment proceedings.

Smith said that UD&V/North America companies (products include Smirnoff

Vodka and Gordon’s Gin) stage their own social responsibility programs

and participate in similar efforts through trade associations. He

pointed to UD&V’s involvement in efforts to train alcohol servers to be

more cognizant of the problems that can arise from overconsumption.
