SANTA CLARA, CA: Ending months of speculation, Yahoo! officially

introduced Fleishman-Hillard as its new agency of record last week.

The announcement concluded a fiercely competitive three-month review for

the dollars 2 to dollars 3 million Yahoo! business that included pitches

from Ogilvy, Ketchum and incumbent Niehaus Ryan Wong.

While Yahoo! PR director Diane Hunt declined comment about other

finalists in the review, sources hinted that Ogilvy’s relatively small

San Francisco presence might have tilted the scales in Fleishman’s

favor.

Hunt said the company’s selection of Fleishman came down to a question

of resources, bandwidth and multidisciplinary expertise. ’One of the

things that was important to us was strong global capabilities,’ she

explained.

’Also, they have a strong DC office and specific expertise in Internet

policy.’

For Fleishman/SF, which has metamorphosed from what was in 1994

essentially a service office for the Levi Strauss corporate account into

one of the city’s top hi-tech players, the Yahoo! win represents a major

feather in its cap. While declining to disclose exact dollar figures,

West Coast regional president Doug Michelman called the account ’one of

Fleishman’s largest pieces of business company-wide.’
