WASHINGTON, DC: In the wake of a US Surgeon General report on the

’silent epidemic’ in dental care, Oral Health America (OHA) has tapped

Hyde Park Communications for a 10-year PR effort.

The immediate goal of the OHA’s Campaign for Oral Health Parity,

according to Hyde Park CEO Jeffrey Sandman, is simply to raise awareness

of dental-care shortcomings.

Sandman believes that middle-class Americans tend to regard dental care

as a cosmetic rather than a health issue. He notes, however, that oral

health is directly related to problems such as heart disease and

diabetes. At the same time, less than half of US employers provide

dental benefits to employees and 150 million Americans lack dental

coverage.

’We need to get this issue on the agenda of policy makers and opinion

leaders,’ said Sandman, who puts the cost of the campaign’s launch phase

in the ’lower six figures.’

Oral Health America, a non-profit group based in Chicago, has also been

waging a campaign against chewing tobacco. The group received a dollars

200,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation earlier this year to

raise awareness of dental-care deficiencies.
