WASHINGTON, DC: Hoping to reverse the perception that DC folks pay

more attention to presidential polls than to the NFC East standings,

Wave Public Relations has launched a new ’Sports Wave’ division.

Agency president Wayne Henninger said that there are few sports markets

like Washington. ’Every major sports team is here except baseball, and

that’s up the road in Baltimore.’ He added that several major sports

companies and marketing agencies (SFX, Octagon and Brotman Winter Fried)

boast a huge presence in the area, and believes that there’s more than

enough business to go around.

To this end, the new sports PR arm has already cemented a relationship

with the soon-to-be-launched Gilco Sports and Entertainment

Marketing.

Sports Wave will also launch b-to-b site golfcommerce.com and represent

US Olympic racewalker Andrew Hermann.

However, Brotman Winter Fried president Charles Brotman said Wave may

find the DC sports PR scene competitive and perhaps limiting. Brotman,

who formed his firm nearly 30 years ago after handling PR for the old

Washington Senators, said, ’This isn’t New York, Boston, Chicago or

LA.

There’s not enough sports to have several major sports-marketing firms

here.’

Henninger and Wave partner David Wieme are former members of the Detroit

Pistons’ PR team.
