DIARY: Iowa folk keep an eye on their ears

Forget The Real World. An Iowa seed company has come up with its own version of reality TV and is attracting more than just the farm crowd.

crowd.

Garst Seed is sponsoring a ’CornCam’ on the Web site of trade magazine

Iowa Farmer Today, allowing visitors to the site

(www.IowaFarmer.com/corncam/corn.html) to literally watch corn grow. As

exciting as watching paint dry? Maybe even more.

’This is reality Web TV,’ boasts Garst PR manager Jeff Lacina. ’A lot of

people pull it up and just leave it up on their screens.’

The site, which has enjoyed as many as 88,000 hits in one day, has

spurred thousands of e-mails to the company. It has also accomplished an

important PR goal: keeping Garst in the news during the summer growing

season, a time when farmers aren’t usually thinking much about their

seed suppliers.

Lacina jokes that the CornCam is about to take on another aspect of

reality TV. ’As the stalks get larger, they’ll soon be elbowing each

other out of the shot.’ Wonder which will be the first stalk to get

bumped?
