DIARY: One more intern, one more PR stain

The PR industry hands out a lot of awards - regional, national, you name it. So we’ve pretty much learned to push aside the ’award-winning’ tag and focus on the matter at hand.

name it. So we’ve pretty much learned to push aside the ’award-winning’

tag and focus on the matter at hand.

Alas, sometimes this isn’t possible. Take, for instance, an allegedly

award-winning firm that sent us a release headed ’Slapdash PR (name

changed to protect the not-so-innocent) has summer intern from

prestigious Boston College.’

We’re not saying that agencies shouldn’t hype their summer interns, nor

that BC isn’t one of the best schools around. We’re just curious why the

body of the release says that the intern in question is actually

attending Simmons College, a smaller school in the Boston area.

The release quotes the president of Slapdash as saying, ’We’re going to

give (the intern) hands-on experience working in a public relations

firm, preparing new client presentations and building her own PR

portfolio.’ Lessons about the importance of accuracy might not be a bad

place to start.
