DIARY: Knicks help Mets win back ’86 glory

The New York Mets had been without their 1986 World Championship banner

since opening day of 1997, when it was stolen right off the pole during

a maintenance worker’s coffee break. Despite a concerted investigation

by the team, the flag couldn’t be located.

Enter Dennis D’Agostino, PR chief for the New York Knicks (not

technically a Mets rival, but the two teams do compete for fans’

eyeballs and dollars in the sports-mad New York metropolitan area).

While perusing an Internet auction site, he stumbled upon a listing for

the ’original’ 1986 banner.

Putting one and one together, he e-mailed news of his find to Shea

Stadium operations director Kevin McCarthy and VP Bob Mandt. A few days

later, the police turned up the missing flag in Queens.

If only everybody in the profession could play together so nicely.
