INDIANAPOLIS: Bypassing the usual big agency suspects, Thomson Electronics has selected Marin County, CA-based hi-tech boutique Switzer Communications to handle PR for the company's new line of RCA-branded eBooks.

Value of the account was not disclosed, but it is likely to represent a significant piece of business for Switzer, a 20-person, dollars 1.8 million firm with clients such as Handspring, LEGO Media International and Quack.com.

Thomson's decision to go with Switzer rather than a major-name consumer agency such as Ketchum or Hill & Knowlton makes sense given the firm's established expertise in the eBook space. NuvoMedia, creators of the Rocket eBook, used Switzer for PR until the company's December 1999 acquisition by Gemstar Publishing. Earlier this year, RCA teamed up with Gemstar in a licensing agreement to produce and market the next-generation reader devices, dubbed RCA eBooks.

'We are confident that Switzer's team will provide us with the PR support we need to effectively launch and grow our eBook product line,' said Dave Arland, director of corporate PR and government relations for Thomson Multimedia and Electronics.

Added Switzer principal Jessica Switzer, 'We see this as a good example of how an agency can bounce back from a client's acquisition.'
