Whether it's publicizing Pat Boone's upstart record label or Death Row rap magnate Suge Knight, Jonathan Wolfson of Brown Wolf Public Relations has a way with words. But don't just peg him as a 'music guy' - if the New York Giants came calling, he'd be all over it.
What will be the next big thing to hit PR, and why? My hope is that the music industry will be more about talent and less about image. I know that this is a strange stance for a publicist to take, but if this did happen, then the PR professional would have to have a great feel for music and knowledge of music history.
Who will be the PR industry's next big hero, and why? The pro that makes Barry Manilow cool again.
What is your favorite sports team? The New York Giants. If publicity would help them win more games, then I'd donate my services for free.
Tell us something interesting about your agency. We handle everything from Pat Boone's record label - The Gold Label, which caters to a 50-plus demographic - to Death Row Records, the innovators of West Coast rap.
What was your proudest moment? Moving out of my parents' house. They have since changed the locks.
What was your most embarrassing moment? About five years ago, I was doing tour press for an opening act of a large tour. I was so enthusiastic about the band that I gave a better interview than the band did. The journalist then quoted me as saying, 'They (my band) have been smokin' the headliner all tour.' This was not a good thing.
What would you do if you didn't do what you do? I don't know. I have no real skills. I'd probably be a rock DJ.
What is your best and/or worst habit? By watching TV, I get ideas about the outlets in which it would be appropriate to publicize my clients.
The downside of this is that I have difficulty relaxing while watching TV. So I pretty much stick to Simpsons reruns.
What is your idea of perfect bliss? Ignorance. The less I know, the better I sleep, which is why I spent the majority of my youth sleeping.
What would you do on a desert island? Pray for Ginger and Maryann to get shipwrecked.
What will you do when you retire? Move to Florida, eat dinner at 2 pm and talk about the good old days.
What is your best ability? Persuasion - just ask my wife.
