NEW YORK: Victory 2000, a New York-based Democratic group, has hired two liaisons to help Hillary Clinton increase her appeal in the Jewish community.

Miramax director of corporate communications Matthew Hiltzik has joined the organization as director of Jewish community outreach, while political pro Jessica Ashenberg is coming on board as deputy director.

The additions to the campaign are likely welcome ones, as analysts estimate that Clinton needs 60-65% of the Jewish vote to win election (she is currently at around 50%). But after enduring allegations of an anti-Semitic slur 26 years ago as well as condemnation for having advocated a Palestinian state, the first lady has a lot of fences to mend.

Victory 2000 spokesman Peter Kauffmann said the decision to hire Hiltzik and Ashenberg was part of a 'continued effort to reach out to the Jewish community.' However, Clinton campaign manager Bill DeBlasio downplayed the liaison posts, saying that the first lady's campaign has always worked as a team.

'We have many, many Jewish leaders who are ready to help us and we want to get all of them involved,' he explained, noting that the campaign has reached out to several sources.

Clinton has already asked VP nominee Joseph Lieberman, who is an Orthodox Jew, to campaign with her. Lieberman, the first Jew to run for VP on a major-party ticket, has defended Hillary on several occasions.

Hiltzik formerly served as press secretary and deputy executive director of the New York Democratic Party. Ashenberg worked as a legislative aide for Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.
