Dan Forbush, president of ProfNet, a subsidiary of PRNewswire, said the new system is particularly friendly to PR clients because it will make entering experts into the database easier and allow information officers to specify with much greater precision the categories of queries they want forwarded to them.

Currently, there are 4,000 experts in the ProfNet database, each of which had to be entered individually. Under the new system, PR members will be able to post expert profiles directly.

It also will be possible for a member to turn the job of posting profiles over to the experts themselves and just review the postings before they go live. That could be a big advantage for large organizations such as universities with lots of experts who they would like to include.

Reporters are also winners in this change. They will be able to send a single query simultaneously to multiple experts cataloged in the database, and they'll be able to conduct interviews online with more than one expert at a time. Meanwhile, the experts will be able to communicate with each other, brainstorming and sharing opinions.

In recent months, the number of alternatives to Profnet has increased dramatically with MediaMap's Source Net and Business Wire's Expert Source.

Another alternative called PR Reporter Referral Network from vendor Bottom Line is expected soon.
