CHICAGO: Chicago Tribune media columnist Jim Kirk is expected to move up to replace George Lazarus, who died suddenly on Sept. 8 of undisclosed causes, sources said. Lazarus had covered the Chicago PR, advertising and marketing beats for 39 years.

Kirk covered the marketing industry while at rival Chicago Sun-Times.

Lazarus, 68, was still putting in his characteristically long hours - arriving at work early and often attending evening events - until the day he died. He had left the Tribune newsroom in tuxedo, heading for an event, the night before he died.

'He hadn't missed a beat and seemed to be going strong,' said Greg Burns, Tribune associate managing editor for business.

People came to either hate or love Lazarus - sometimes both - because of the power of his column.

'He was a great reporter, highly competitive and usually demanded and got scoops,' said Tom Harris, a longtime Chicago PR pro. Dan Edelman agreed: 'He didn't want anyone to get anything before he's had a chance to evaluate it. He leaves a big hole here.'

He hated having competitors scoop him to the point of freezing out of his column PR people who gave news to papers like The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal before giving it to him. Interestingly, people who leaked him items were often included in his column's rundown of birthday greetings.
