NEW YORK: Fashion giant Tommy Hilfiger USA has named existing global marketing head Peter Connolly as its new worldwide public relations chief.

Connolly's role has been expanded to cover all communications for the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation subsidiary under the new title of president of worldwide marketing and communications.

The high-profile fashion brand, which has suffered shrinking profits and a 58% drop in share price this year, has made boosting its image a top priority. Last week the company announced plans to open up to eight stores in Canada next year. However, it will have to compete against the entries of fellow US brands Gap and Old Navy.

Reporting directly to Tommy Hilfiger and CEO Joel Horowitz, Connolly now has a remit to oversee public relations, marketing, advertising and the firm's online venture, tommy.com.

'We have been actively evaluating our internal organization to assure that we best leverage our resources,' said Horowitz. 'With Peter's appointment we will bring together a number of related functions under his leadership, providing a more integrated approach to our communications-related efforts.'

Hilfiger added, 'Peter will play a critical role in our brand's continued evolution and growth.'
