NEW YORK: Aiming to capitalize on its tech specialty, Makovsky & Co. is embarking on an aggressive expansion program, spearheaded by a launch in Europe.

A UK-based office will open its doors in May. Heading it up will be Hylton Barnes, who hails from the UK and is currently serving as EVP at Makovsky's New York headquarters.

Makovsky is also eyeing the possibility of opening a satellite in Silicon Valley.

Ken Makovsky, the firm's founder and president, forecasts a 'second Internet revolution in Europe' and says the venture 'gives us global positioning.'

The new European branch will likely launch with a staff of five, and will focus initially on technology, financial and professional services.

Makovsky said the firm has several existing clients in the EU, including British Royal Mail and the funds transfer organization SWIFT, with several more 'in negotiation.'

Barnes' background is steeped in marketing and advertising, including stints at UK agencies Saatchi & Saatchi, Lopex and Poulter Partners. Most recently he served as CEO of MMC, a Swedish b-to-b marketing company.

'Hylton feels that PR is moving to the center of marketing,' said Makovsky, 'and he wants to embrace that and use it as a platform to build Europe for us.'

Barnes said Europe is ripe for the kind of technological change that swept the US in the 1990s. 'Inevitably, there is going to continue to be growth in the European countries as they try to catch up,' he said.

'If you just look at the very basics of it, (personal computer) penetration is reaching saturation in the US, while it's still a long way from that in Europe.'
