NEW YORK: Manning, Selvage & Lee has hired Harriet Shelare as VP to handle the weighty task of media relations for Pharmacia's blockbuster arthritis drug, Celebrex.

Shelare has already started working to communicate the results of a study released last week that compared the safety of Celebrex to Vioxx, a rival arthritis medication manufactured by Merck.

The safety study was presented during the scientific meeting of the American College of Rheumatology. It reveals that Celebrex is less likely than Vioxx to cause increases in edema and systolic blood pressure or gastrointestinal and renal side effects.

In Pharmacia's third quarter earnings statement, also released last week, Celebrex boasted dollars 637 million in US sales.

'This is a major piece of business,' said Doug Arbesfeld, co-director for MS&L's New York healthcare practice. 'We felt that because of its size and importance to us, and to our client, we needed someone dedicated to it.'

Shelare was previously a VP and director of media relations at Nelson PR. She was also a MD at Hill and Knowlton.
