BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA: North American chemical and biotechnology giant Monsanto has hired Federico Ovejero as regional manager of government affairs and PR in southern South America. His areas of responsibility will include Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia. Ovejero was previously PR manager for Wal-Mart in Argentina.

Ovejero is a lawyer with extensive experience in media relations, including a stint as PR manager for one of Argentina's main private train companies.

He will be involved in Monsanto's PR effort for genetically modified crops, a highly controversial issue in the region.

Meanwhile, Wal-Mart is under pressure to find a replacement for Ovejero.

The company recently ceased working with Nueva Comunicacion, its local PR agency of record, due to the firm's recent restructuring. Subsequently, Wal-Mart hired a Washington, DC-based firm headed by lobbyist and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to handle its international PR work.

But according to sources close to Wal-Mart, the company has not yet started to work with Kissinger in Argentina, where it has to counterattack regulations intended to stop its expansion in that country.
