LISLE, IL: Tellabs, a telecommunications infrastructure company, is pushing hard to shift its focus away from the technical and towards the consumer. To accomplish this, and to strengthen PR efforts overall, it has hired George Stenitzer as VP of communications.

'For 25 years we looked at the business through the eyes of engineers,' said Stenitzer. Now Tellabs wants to concentrate on finding out what benefits consumers demand from technology, and work towards fulfilling those expectations.

'We want to look at the customers' needs through their eyes and really shape the company that way,' Stenitzer said.

Tellabs CEO Richard Notebaert plucked Stenitzer from RR Donnelley, where he was VP of corporate communications. The two men had previously worked together at Ameritech. Stenitzer will head up an internal communications team of 20, and the company has no agency of record.

Stenitzer said the company will know it has been successful 'when people think of us as they do of Nortel, Lucent and Cisco, helping customers migrate their systems towards the future.'
