Doug Sherk will head the New York-based firm's San Francisco office, which he launched in 1989, and will look after expansion efforts and regulatory matters under the new SEC guidelines.

'It's like coming home,' said Sherk, who started with Morgen-Walke as a VP in 1986 and left as a partner in 1998 to start GCI's New York IR practice.

He left GCI in 1999 to serve a one-and-a-half-year stint as president and CEO of Redchip Partners, the corporate services component of the market Web site Redchip.com. During his tenure, Redchip won contracts with more than 60 companies and was named 'Best Small-Cap Stock Site' by Forbes Magazine. Sherk also presided over the site's sale to Freerealtime.com.

He said Morgen Walke's diverse client roster and strong IR practice would keep it competitive. 'IR has become a lot more competitive, with a lot of people going off and doing their own shop. The firm has an excellent name, and we aren't tied to any one industry.'

Sherk, who claims to have become something of an authority on the new SEC fair disclosure rules, sees opportunity in them. 'Reg FD has the potential to be a strong driver for IR consulting services, especially for the small- and mid-cap markets,' he said.

'I have expanded my horizons,' he said of his adventures in the dot-com arena. 'I have no regrets.'
