WASHINGTON: Reaching out to the online Hispanic community, WorldCom has added a searchable Spanish and English glossary to its Web site with more than 1,000 common hi-tech and Internet-related terms.

The glossary, called the Tecnoguia, was developed in collaboration with the Tomas Rivera Policy Institute, a Latino think tank.

Regla Perez Pino, a Latin America specialist at Worldcom media relations, said the Tecnoguia could also help to standardize Internet terminology among Spanish-speaking communities. 'We need to find ways of bridging technology gaps,' she said, 'and language is a major part of it.'

'With all the new techno-babble coming out, it's always good to have an authority,' said Manny Ruiz, CEO of Hispanic PR Wire. Ruiz was at Ketchum in 1997, when that agency launched the original, print version of the Tecnoguia for MCI. 'Even since then, there's been an avalanche of new technical terms, a lot of which have puzzled Latinos as to whether they're Spanish, English, or Spanglish,' he said.
