BALTIMORE, MD: John Maroon, former VP of PR and community relations for the Washington Redskins, has been named VP, communications for new sports marketing firm, Tufton Sports & Management.

The company, originally formed eight years ago as The Tufton Group, is under the direction of Baltimore Oriole staff Cal Ripken, Jr., and Ira Rainess, a player agent.

The new company will handle all aspects of sports marketing, including promotions, endorsements, licensing and media training. Players they will represent include Sean Casey of the Cincinnati Reds and the Montreal Expos' Michael Barrett.

Maroon was one of several sports communications people who signed on with Redskins after the team was purchased by Daniel Snyder. But the Redskins PR department got off to a shaky start and had trouble keeping staff.

Maroon was with the 'Skins for a year.

Maroon began his career as a media relations director for the Cleveland Indians, before joining the Orioles as director of PR, a post he held for five years.
