PR PLAY OF THE WEEK: Belize proves too tempting to avoid

DENVILLE, NJ: Though three advertisers - Sears, Roebuck & Co., Quaker Oats and Best Buy - have already vowed not to advertise around Fox's latest reality show, Temptation Island, at least one party has benefited from its association.

DENVILLE, NJ: Though three advertisers - Sears, Roebuck & Co., Quaker Oats and Best Buy - have already vowed not to advertise around Fox's latest reality show, Temptation Island, at least one party has benefited from its association.

That's the country of Belize which tempted the production company, Rocket Science Laboratories, to film the show on the island.

The relationship came about after producers of the Fox series made an initial call to the Belize Tourism Board. The country's New Jersey agency, Richartz Fliss Clark and Pope (RFCP), then bombarded the producers with follow-up calls and invitations to visit select locations all over the island. It seems the crystal waters, exotic flora and sandy beaches won out.

'We fed them with ideas about suitable venues such as the Captain Morgan's resort. We suggested places to go on dates,' said Tiffany Betten-court, associate account executive, 'and we showed them bedrooms.'

For those who haven't sampled Temptation Island, the show features four happy couples who are tempted into infidelity by 26 alluring model types.

The show attracted 16 million viewers on its first airing, but has been the center of moral outrage.

Fortunately much of the media coverage of the controversial show also mentioned the beautiful backdrop. The New York Times featured the country in its Sunday travel section and Belize counted mentions on The Howard Stern Show, Time magazine and Entertainment Tonight, among thousands of other impressions.

Alan Fliss, RFCP partner, said: 'The most rewarding aspect was the ability of Temptation Island to bring the beauty and diversity of Belize into the homes of millions. The net result will most certainly raise top-of-mind awareness.'

And to prove it the island is set to record an all-time high in visitor numbers for the month of January, earning itself a PR Play of the Week.
