WASHINGTON: The convergence between political consulting and public affairs will likely become more pronounced with the ascension of Donna Lucas to the presidency of the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC).

Lucas, CEO and president of NCG Porter Novelli, intends to build upon the work of her predecessor (now AAPC chairman), political consultant Ray Strother, and to have more programming and activities for PA professionals.

Lucas won the presidency of the AAPC, which has a membership of 800 political consulting and public affairs professionals, at the AAPC's recent meeting in DC.

'You'll see more of an effort to recruit corporate public affairs professionals and government relations professionals,' promised Lucas. 'After the last election, we invited every public affairs firm in Washington to submit their work for Pollie awards (given by the AAPC).'

Lucas also said she is interested in furthering links between the AAPC, academia and the news media.

Political consultants are becoming increasingly interested in PA work.

The two disciplines share the same tools, but PA offers a more stable source of income. PA also retains close links to the world of campaigns and elections. Both address similar issues, and campaigns are often good testing ground for new strategies and tactics.

The AAPC awarded Howard Wolfson, the campaign press secretary for Hillary Clinton, a Pollie for being most valuable Democratic consultant. Bush-Cheney 2000 campaign chief strategist Karl Rove, now senior advisor to the president, was selected to receive the Pollie for campaign manager of the year.
