Welcome center to cost UN dollars 60m

NEW YORK: The United Nations is planning to put dollars 60 million

into building a visitors center in its New York headquarters to increase

awareness of its global peacekeeping role and activities.

People in the United States are 'woefully uninformed' about the UN's

mission, said Gillian Sorensen, assistant secretary general of the UN's

office of external relations. 'We need to convey what the UN does in a

more exciting way so that people are inspired by their visit to the

headquarters.'

One million people currently visit the UN building on First Avenue each

year, and it is estimated that this could rise to 1.25 million with

better facilities.
