The Martin Agency's PR arm breaks away to form Slay PublicRelations

RICHMOND, VA: What was once Martin Public Relations (MPR) is

reinventing itself this week as Slay Public Relations.

President Joe Slay said Richmond's PR profile has been growing and

explained, 'It is important for us to take advantage of those

opportunities.'

Slay joined MPR parent company The Martin Agency (TMA), an Interpublic

Group company, in 1982 as a one-person PR department. He then became

president of an expanded team in the late 1980s, and saw it grow to

include 31 staff members and bill dollars 5.7 million last year. He

predicts 'modest growth' to dollars 6 million this year.

According to Slay, the separation from TMA went amicably. For at least

the first year, the agency will be incorporated as a legal corporation

owned by TMA.

For the time being, Slay PR will stay in TMA's space, but is likely to

be moved next year. It will retain all of its clients, including the US

Virgin Islands, Champion Mortgage and the Heinz Family

Philanthropies.

Slay said plans for the first year are to build the brand and expand the

Los Angeles, New York and Washington, DC offices.

The agency also has a one-person outpost in Nashville, TN.
