Energy companies are trying to find ways of making it easier for
their customers to communicate with them in the event of summer's
predicted shortage. Take Florida Power and Light's new plan for
reporting power outages: report them online at www.fpl.com.
But ... don't computers need electricity?
FPL spokespeople acknowledge the contradiction, but say people can go to
work and report power outages from their offices, which, of course, will
be buzzing with power even if the home grid is down. Or perhaps it's
time to hurry up and invent that solar-powered modem?
Of course, the PR gurus at FPL have retained an option for those of us
who don't have battery-powered modems: 1-800-4OUTAGE.
