LAST CALL: Jim Jeffords brews up another storm

He may be the loneliest man in Congress these days, but Jim

Jeffords (I-VT) has at least one thing no other federal legislator can

claim: an eponymous beer with which to drown his sorrows.

In honor of Jeffords' departure from the Republican party - which threw

power in the Senate to the Democrats - Vermont-based Magic Hat Brewing

Company has debuted Jeezum Jim Ale, a moderate beer for a moderate

lawmaker.

The brewery produced the beer as a tribute to Jeffords' bold move. "Love

him or hate him," reads the Web site, "he represents one man, one vote,

one small state, one great nation."

The name Jeezum - a swear word in the Green Mountain state - was first

attached to Jeffords' name by a local columnist several years ago.

However, Jeffords conceded to The Washington Post last week, "I'm sure

they have some not-quite-polite swear words for me in the Republican

conference."

Take heart, Jim. The brewery expects Jeezum Jim to leap off the

shelves.

Do you think that would be the case had the beer been named after some

of your former colleagues, such as Thad Cochran (R-MS) or Mike Crapo

(R-ID)?
