LAST CALL: Public perception is NASCAR's reality

Here's a nice post-modern tale all about perception and reality.

Last Saturday was an emotional day for NASCAR fans, as Dale Earnhardt,

Jr. was racing at Daytona for the first time since his father's death

there in February.

Heightening the feeling was an interview with NASCAR president Mike

Helton, sitting under the dual glare of the TV cameras and NBC's Brian

Williams.

As we all know, bungled communications and delayed reports have taken

their toll on the sport - something which Williams was keen to explore.

And all it took was for Helton to mention the word "PR," and Williams

pounced with the question, "Do you have a PR problem?"

Felton paused, and replied, "If we don't, the perception is that we do."
