LAST CALL: Billboards to spell out Bangkok virtues

Guess the full name of the city of angels. Give up? The correct

answer is: "City of Angels, Great City of Immortals, Magnificent City of

the Nine Gems, Seat of the King, City of Royal Palaces, Home of the Gods

Incarnate, Erected by Visvakarman at Indra's Behest."

Oh, you thought we meant Los Angeles? Sorry, we meant Bangkok,

Thailand.

To encourage tourism, the Tourism Authority of Thailand has proposed to

erect what will surely be the world's largest billboards around the

country, displaying the city's full name.

But hang on. With those billboards around, won't tourists be less likely

to spend their cash on visiting the city's natural wonders? They'll

spend their whole visit trying to pronounce the city's name in Thai:

Krungthep Mahanakhon Amon Ratta-nakosin Mahinthara Ayutthaya

Mahadilokphop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udom-ratchaniwet Mahasathan

Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakka-thatthiya Witsanukam Prasit. (That's easy

for you to say - Ed.)
