QUESTIONS & ANSWERS: Cindy Pittman

Her heart's desire is to have her press releases read, and if

anyone knows someone who looks like Mick Jagger, please get in touch

with her.

Meet Cindy Pittman, PR manager for the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in

San Diego.

Describe the company you work for I'm totally spoiled. The Reuben H.

Fleet Science Center is a non-profit museum in a beautiful park with

dozens of museums and gardens. We have 95,000 square feet of exhibit

space and the world's first IMAX Dome Theater.

What do you do? I'm the PR manager: the media girl. Press releases,

articles, keeping our editorials listed correctly, press junkets,

etc ...

Tell us something funny about your company. The staff goes "hog-wild" at

Halloween - everyone dresses up, including the executive director! The

marketing department dressed up as an old B-movie and even created a

skit performed in front of all staff. Then the entire staff paraded down

The Prado - the boulevard between all the park museums - and danced and

whirled around for all to see!

How did you get into PR? I was in fitness and health and doing some

marketing. Then my alma mater needed a marketing director. Because I was

on the alumni board and knew the "right" people, they hired me on the

spot.

What is your greatest achievement? Getting over 63 minutes of local TV

coverage in two days for an IMAX film opening. (That just happened last

week!)

What was your best pitch/best stunt? A celebrity wall-climbing

challenge. Media types were invited to climb a new 50-foot climbing wall

we were opening at a county park. Over 60 anchors, reporters and DJs

showed up (cameras included) and raced one another. We got tons of

coverage.

What's the most daring thing you've ever done? I'm thinking way too hard

on this, which leads me to believe I need to get a life! I have

bungee-jumped at 3am in Mexico - does that count? (Works for us -

Ed.)

What are you working on this week? Searching for a Mick Jagger

look-alike for a special screening of Rolling Stones at the Max, opening

a new exhibition on psychology and editing the fall calendar of

events.

What invention would make your job easier? A direct link to editors,

producers and reporter's computers when I'm pitching story ideas. Oh,

and it would be great if editors would actually read the releases I send

them.

What do you wish you hadn't said to the media? It wasn't what I said, it

was the twangy Southern accent that sometimes pops up when I speak on

camera!

If you were an animal, what would you be? I would love to fly around

like a bird, but only at a zoo where I'd be protected and fed

generously!

Name one thing about your past people would be surprised to learn That I

was actually pre-med in college and can name every bone in the human

body.
