LAST CALL: Sometimes silence speaks the loudest

PRWeek is used to the frustration of calling the number on a press

release for more information, only to be passed around person to person

and voicemail to voicemail.

So we have to applaud the honesty displayed by American Airlines/TWA's

August 17 press release announcing that it would cap travel agent

commissions on domestic tickets to US and Canadian destinations

The release stated: "American will have no further comment on this

matter." And it wasn't the only tight-lipped airline. Within the week,

United, Delta, Northwest and US Airways followed suit, also issuing

unusual "no further comment" press releases.

"In cases where there's been a history of legal action, it's critical to

us that we limit our comments," explained Kurt Ebenhoch, a spokesperson

for Northwest.

Good advice, Kurt. We're sure a number of people out there are nodding

sagely, with 20/20 hindsight vision and a pink slip.
