EDITORIAL: Pathmark staff was ready for spotlight

If you won $1.7 million dollars, would you stay in your job?

Really?

Last week, 33 employees of a Pathmark supermarket in Brick, NJ shared a

$57 million prize, and 32 of the 33 told the descending media

swarm that they would keep their jobs.

Interviews filmed inside the store showed staff who had won praising

their employer, while staff members who hadn't won - who might have been

expected to be pretty bitter - were talking about the camaraderie in the

store. This was the kind of PR Pathmark could only have dreamed

about.

As with so many dream PR moments, it couldn't have been planned. There

is more chance of being attacked by a shark than winning the lottery,

but it was the moment when all that employee relations work at Pathmark

paid some big dividends.

The specific event might not have been planned, but there was a lot of

hard internal communications work that went into this 24 hours of great

publicity.
