Media disregards Falwell comments

LOS ANGELES: The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation

(GLAAD) campaigned behind the scenes last week to encourage media

outlets not to cover remarks by Baptist preacher Jerry Falwell regarding

culpability of gays, lesbians, feminists, and liberals in the terrorist

attacks on New York and Washington, DC.

"We right away put out a statement trying to dissuade media from

covering it at all," said GLAAD communications director Steve Spurgeon.

"We didn't want to give his comments the legitimacy that a news story

would give him."

Falwell's remarks were made during a September 13 broadcast of Pat

Robertson's conservative ministry show The 700 Club. He later issued an

apology.

Spurgeon said GLAAD contacted several outlets including CNN, which was

scrolling the story across its website. Within two hours, the banner was

removed, and as of September 17, the original story was not in CNN

archives.
