QUESTIONS & ANSWERS: Molly Watson, GCI Dragonette

She romanced her way into PR, but she's a tough cookie who doesn't

let a petty little thing like childbirth get in the way of a good pitch.

Meet Molly "Peppermint Patty" Watson, VP in the healthcare practice of

GCI Dragonette.

Describe the company you work for: GCI Dragonette is the Chicago base of

GCI Group. We are a midsized office with practice areas including

healthcare, shelter, corporate, and technology. We partnered with GCI

just over two years ago because we share the same spirit of

entrepreneurship - we value non-traditional problem solving and

strategic thinking.

How do you make a difference? I'm a Libra. I tend to be able to bring

together diverse groups of people.

Tell us something interesting about your agency: Sometimes the phones

cut out when the "El" goes by. And last year, we won the PRSA's

fundraising version of Chicago's "Cows On Parade" with "Global

Cowmoooonication."

What is your greatest achievement? Getting a top 10 print reporter to

return my call on the way to the hospital to have a baby.

What is your biggest failure? My mother still doesn't understand what I

do.

How did you get into PR? It was very calculated. I fell in love with a

talent agent who needed a publicist for his bands. What can I say? It

was 1989, and I needed a job.

How did you get where you are today? I visualize my goals and listen to

my gut.

What would you do if you didn't do what you do? Ride and train horses,

and write for Practical Horseman.

What would you like to change about the PR industry? The perception that

it's all about who you know.

Who do you most look like? Some say Peppermint Patty, or Molly from the

American Girls collection.

What is your favorite magazine? It's a toss up between People and

Practical Horseman.

What would you do on a desert island? Does this assume I'm stranded with

an assortment of Fed Ex boxes?

Name one thing about your past that people would be surprised to learn:

I started my career in PR working as a publicist for the Led Zeppelin

tribute band, Physical Graffiti.

What will you do when you retire? Be a yummy mummy. You know, one of

those women with over-aerobicized bodies who picks her kids up from

school in a Mercedes SUV.

What is your best ability? Media relations. I just love the immediate

gratification of a good placement.

What is your philosophy? The good ones borrow, the great ones steal.

What is the secret of your success? A great team, a very comfortable

office, and snacks.
