LAST CALL: Sklyer pushes on after 'shovegate'

Mayor Michael Bloomberg's press secretary, Ed Skyler, has been accused of beating back the press for his boss - literally.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg's press secretary, Ed Skyler, has been accused of beating back the press for his boss - literally.

The mini-scandal erupted on the steps of New York's city hall on April 12 when a local news crew claims Skyler assaulted its cameraman. The incident was first reported in The New York Observer.

The reporter and cameraman claimed that as they approached the mayor and his entourage in the hopes of asking a question, Skyler blurted a profanity and shoved the cameraman.

Skyler said the incident is behind him and was the result of a misunderstanding.

"I've spoken to the reporter since,

Skyler told PRWeek. "I understand why she was disappointed, but the contact was incidental and unintentional."

Nevertheless, "shovegate

raised the ire of Gabe Pressman, veteran political reporter for the local NBC affiliate, who wrote the mayor a blistering letter in which he accused the Bloomberg's office of not respecting the press' first amendment rights.
