HOUSTON: Phillips Petroleum's corporate affairs manager Sam Falcona has emerged as PR top dog in the firm's upcoming merger with Conoco.

As VP of communications and public affairs, Falcona will be in charge of internal, external, and financial communications, advertising, and other PR-related functions.

His counterpart at Houston-based Conoco, corporate public affairs manager Sondra Fowler, will retire.

Falcona will be one of four VPs reporting to Thomas Knudson, president and SVP in the government and public affairs division. Knudson now oversees Conoco's HR, information management, and corporate communications.

Other members of his post-merger staff will include Phillips' government relations VP Don Duncan, who will become federal affairs VP, Conoco's Gulf Coast business unit GM William Easter, who will become state affairs VP, and Conoco's executive assistant to the CEO Elizabeth Williamson, who will become international affairs VP.
