LOS ANGELES: The Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the largest archdiocese in the country, has hired Carolina Guevara as associate director of media relations.

A Peruvian native and former Latino spokesperson for former LA Mayor Richard Riordan, Guevara is charged with acting as a liaison for the Latino community and media.

"The Catholic community here has a very strong faith,

explained Guevara of her assignment. "This also shows that the archdiocese knows (Latinos) are a strong and vital part of our community."

Guevara will also help archdiocese communications head Tod Tamberg deal with the ongoing sex scandals that have plagued the church nationally in recent months. The LA Arch-diocese, led by Cardinal Roger Mahony, recently dismissed between six and 12 priests who allegedly molested children.
