LEESBURG, VA: John Clemons, outgoing chairman of the IABC, is also leaving his position of VP of internal communications at Nextel to open his own one-man PR shop, Clemons Communication.

Clemons plans to offer strategic counsel to small businesses, and also thinks he will be able to sell his expertise in internal communications to larger agencies and clients.

Though the PR business remains in low gear in the current sluggish economy, Clemons said, "I think it's a good time for an individual to go into business themselves. Clients, increasingly concerned about the cost-effectiveness of their PR spending, are more likely to seek out independent practitioners today, he reasoned.

Nextel is presently recruiting a replacement for Clemons.
