CAREERS: Where I Work - Lauren Bossers, Account manager, Skutski & Oltmanns

How long have you been working there? Just over two years.

How did you end up in your job? I saw an account executive position advertised on the S&O website and sent my resume.

Describe the physical space you work in. Everything is very neutral and calming, with shades of taupe and black, and warm wood tones. Everyone has their own office with a door (a novelty given the pervasiveness of cube farms), and most have a great view of the Monongahela River and downtown Pittsburgh.

What is the best thing about working there? All of us get whatever goodie we want on our birthdays, in addition to a gift certificate to the restaurant of our choice. Everyone knows to pass me the extra icing.

And the worst thing? I would like to see more men on the account side of the office. (Get your mind out of the gutter - I'm a happily married woman.) We're mostly female at the moment, and I think it's always good to have the balance of opinion and perspective that is inherent in a mixed-gender environment.

What was your luckiest break? My first interview was on an unseasonably hot day. That, combined with my nerves, had me fearing I'd have a clammy handshake. Luckily, I was seated next to an air conditioning unit, so I casually rested my hand on the air vent. When the president came out to shake my hand, he commented that I had quite a cool handshake for such a warm day! I think that went a long way in making a good first impression.

What has been your most embarrassing moment while working there? I would have to say any embarrassing moments happen when we do anything involving alcohol. I'm the office "cheap date," so after just half a drink, I get pink-cheeked, giggly, and want to take a nap.

What is the biggest thing to hit your office in the past year? I'm a microwave popcorn addict, and I think I'm starting to rub off on people. At any given point in the day, you can find the remnants of a popcorn snack break in the kitchen.

Sneak us a good piece of office gossip. Someone in the office keeps stealing lunches from the refrigerator. We're ready to set up a hidden camera and ambush the culprit.
