DURHAM, NC: David Reeder, former director of corporate communications for Bayer, has been named head of communications for EMD Pharmaceuticals - the US affiliate of Germany-based Merck KGaA (not to be confused with Merck, the US pharmaceutical firm).

Citing limited opportunities at Bayer, Reeder said, "At EMD I can focus on a broad swath of communications, including marketing, internal communications, and product development." In his former post, Reeder was responsible for external PR and reported to Bayer's SVP of corporate comms. "The chance to be the head of all communications was enticing," he admitted.

PR chores for EMD's oncology products has been handled by Burson-Marsteller, which will continue to work on the account in an undetermined capacity.

Ame Wadler, managing director and chairman of the agency's healthcare practice, said Burson is "delighted to have someone in that position to partner with going forward."
