WASHINGTON: Some prominent consultants in advertising, marketing, PR and media have formed an alliance, The Communications Center. It will share business leads while providing clients with access to senior level executives.

The Center, based in Bethesda, Maryland, is a 'multi-discipline, low-overhead, quick response operation suitable for short-or long-term use,' said William C. Rolle, Jr., who spearheads the group.

'People need senior level help but can not afford it full time,' said Rolle, who is managing partner of the alliance. In addition, Rolle said these senior level executives may have some available time they can commit to projects. The communications professionals may also find prospects they 'don't want to handle or can't handle.'

One advantage for communications professionals to join The Communications Center is 'you get paid for referring business,' Rolle said. Twenty percent of the fees earned by the service provider is paid to the Center in return for a business recommendation. One half of that fee goes to the person who identified the opportunity and the other half goes to the Center.

Among members of The Communications Center are Rolle, chairman of Rolle Communications, and past president of the National Capital Chapter of the PRSA; Alan Dessoff, formerly with Earle Palmer Brown; E. Bruce Harrison, formerly with Ruder Finn; Kirk Monroe, formerly with Ketchum Communications; Patrick Pellerin, formerly with Hill & Knowlton; Harry Soghigian, formerly with Earle Palmer Brown; and HarlandWarner, formerly with Manning, Selvage & Lee.

Center members meet once a month. Periodically, Rolle said, prospects 'will be invited to state their needs and have access to the skills of the participants who will present them with ideas.' As a result, he hopes, a formal relationship will develop between the prospect and a Center member.

However, the prospect is free to take the ideas presented and have someone else implement them.

Although the Center has not been formally launched, Rolle stated, 'The Center's members have responded to approximately 18 new business opportunities and were successful in working for half of them.'

During its start-up phase, The Communications Center will be located at Rolle Communications, 8008 Herb Farm Drive, Bethesda, Maryland 20817, (301) 469-9560.
