Murdoch eyes Telecom Italia

Rupert Murdoch is reported to be on the verge of investing in yet another digital TV platform. The media tycoon is said to be planning to tie with Telecom Italia, with a view to launching a rival to digital satellite operator Telepiu, which owns most of the US's sports and movie rights.

Rupert Murdoch is reported to be on the verge of investing in yet another digital TV platform. The media tycoon is said to be planning to tie with Telecom Italia, with a view to launching a rival to digital satellite operator Telepiu, which owns most of the US's sports and movie rights.

However, the Italian football league is due to discuss the future of its contract with Telepiu in December. News Corp already has an interest in the British satellite broadcaster BSkyB, but has not had much luck on the European continent. Murdoch pulled out of separate talks with two rival digital operators in Germany while an attempt to establish North American AskyB, as a rival to Primestar, ended in a merger of assets.
