CHICAGO: A former First Chicago PR official has come out on top in the new 275-person public affairs department put in place after the recent merger of First Chicago and Ohio's Banc One.
Gerald Buldak is now senior vice president and head of public affairs at the new holding company, Bank One. Buldak had held a similar post with the old First Chicago. First Chicago veteran Tom Kelly is now responsible for media relations for corporate news and for the states of Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana.
John Russell, who headed up Banc One public relations, is now responsible for US regional media relations and special assignments for former Banc One Chairman John McCoy.
First Chicago's former PR department came through the merger relatively unscathed, said Kelly. Only one person left - voluntarily-to 'take a job closer to her home.' Buldak noted that some lower-level public relations positions may be lost in Illinois and Indiana where the banks have what he termed 'redundancies.'
The blending of the two public relations departments began at senior level positions, he noted, and is now moving down the organization chart to lower level field positions.
