NEW YORK: This Wednesday, the Ritz-Carlton chain is sending its

hotel PR directors to New York for the company’s Third Annual Travel

Writers’ Marketplace and Reception.

Last year, 70 travel writers attended a similar reception at Carnegie

Hall, and Vivian Deuschl, VP of external PR for the Ritz-Carlton,

expects this year’s event to draw a similar number.

Ritz-Carlton is different from many other hotel chains in that almost

every one of its 35 hotels has a PR director. But Deuschl emphasizes

that getting access is only the first step. ’We let the PR directors

know, ’Here’s your chance to meet the travel writers. You better have

something to say.’’

The meetings started three years ago, when the upscale hotel chain began

to notice that some of its PR staffers were having trouble getting New

York-based travel writers to respond to requests for meetings. ’It’s one

of the hardest challenges for a younger PR person,’ Deuschl said.

’Unless you represent a big hotel, it’s too easy for a writer to say, ’I

just don’t have the time for you.’’
