DALLAS: Retailer JCPenney is shuffling its in-house PR deck, losing
a 22-year pro and looking to hire another to handle media relations.
Duncan Muir, Penney’s longtime manager of public and financial
information, has announced plans to take early retirement within the
next few months and start his own corporate and financial PR
Penney does not plan to replace Muir directly. Instead, it is looking
for a PR manager who will take over media-relations functions, corporate
image-building and product publicity.
The salary range for the position is ’flexible, going into the six
digits,’ Muir said.
The new addition to Penney’s small internal PR staff will report to Wynn
Watkins, the retailer’s SVP of investor and PR. While Penney has
traditionally promoted executives from within, in the last six months
the company has hired chief marketing officer Stephen Farley away from
Payless ShoeSource and COO Vanessa Castagna away from Wal-Mart.
