LONDON: Barclays bank last week overhauled its high street

division, slashing 20 of 90 communications jobs.

The move, an early volley in the department’s extensive reorganization,

was initiated by the division’s communications director, Paul

Barber.

Though jobs were scheduled to be cut elsewhere within the Barclays

organization, it is understood that most of the cutbacks will come from

within the employee communications team.

When Barber arrived at the high street arm last year, its communications

staff numbered 115. Since then, however, he has streamlined the

department to make it more cost-effective.

’We are trying to significantly upgrade the communications function,’ he

said. ’Without reorganizing, there was no way to make better use of the

people we already have. It was obvious that there were lots of

opportunities to cut costs.’

The 70 remaining staffers will fill a variety of PR roles, including

media relations, employee communications, communications planning, event

management and electronic communications.

Barclays employs PR teams in four other divisions: its group center,

Corporate Banking, Capital and Global Investors arms. The other teams

were unaffected by Barber’s review.
