I am looking for a new job. How honest should I be about my shortcomings, in particular my almost total inability to do maths and therefore accurate budgets?
If you are applying to be a finance director you have a problem. However, I assume you are applying for a general PR position, in which case I suggest you only admit to your weakness if asked. A CV is rather like a PR campaign. It should present you at your best and not unnecessarily raise weaknesses. Nor, of course, should it make untrue or false claims.
Think of the prospective employer as a journalist. You have a duty not to lie. You don’t have a duty to volunteer a list of shortcomings. Although I have to say, an inability to add up is undoubtedly one of the things that has stopped PR people earning what perhaps they deserve.
