Skinted & minted: the Phoenix and Duck & Waffle

14 Palace Street, Victoria, London SW1E 5JA

Why go?

The Phoenix is a bustling gastro pub a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace. It has a good atmosphere, a mix of locals, business folk and tourists and a large range of beers and great-tasting pub food at a reasonable price.

Best dishes

Fish and chips and the burger are outstanding. There is also a large sharing platter with the usual delights. The lamb steak with potatoes was delicious and my lunch partner enjoyed the burger with hand-cut chips.

How much?

The cheeseburger is £10.50 and the fish and chips £10.95, while the lamb steak special was £13.50. Desserts are all priced at £4.50.

Why go?

This is the highest restaurant in the UK with amazing views of the City. You literally look down on the Gherkin and at night, with London illuminated, it is spectacular. The glass lift takes 20 seconds to reach the 40th floor of the Heron Tower. In addition, the food is fantastically weird and wonderful. Clients will not stop talking about the experience and therefore you.

Best dishes

It has to be the Duck and Waffle signature dish: confit duck on a waffle with fried duck egg and maple syrup. Sounds revolting, tastes amazing.

How much?

Not cheap. You won’t spend less than £50 per head.
