I currently work in-house but have been approached by a big consultancy to take on an international role. Should I take the job?
An international role may mean a swanky job title and a lot of travel. But there are risks.
The biggest is that as soon as there is a fall in revenue and cuts must be made, no one can say what you do that actually earns money. If the job is an international planning or strategy role, the risk is doubled. Moreover, as you are always out of the office, people forget who you are and don’t fight your corner.
Not all international roles are tantamount to taking a seat in the employment undertaker’s waiting room, but consultancies cannot afford multiple layers of bureaucracy. If you take the job, ensure there is at least one big client that would be upset if you left.
